Loopers,

BANDALOOP just landed a major New York Times feature, tracing our journey from mountain cliffs to Broadway, where we’ve choreographed REDWOOD, starring Idina Menzel and directed by Tina Landau.

"This is simply a dream. Infinite gratitude for this transformative experience, to a fully women-led endeavor—for inviting me and BANDALOOP to serve this heartquaking story with vertical dance."

—Melecio Estrella, BANDALOOP Artistic Director

As we soar to new heights, we’re bringing the celebration home. Join us on April 5 at our Oakland studio for our 2nd annual gala—an evening of movement, food, and community. Let’s rise together.

Women Exposing Prison through Art

YBCA Forum and Galleries
701 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94103

An immersive multimedia exhibition co-curated from within prison by Tomiekia Johnson and Chantell-Jeannette Black, in collaboration with Empowerment Avenue. For the exhibition, Johnson and Black asked eight currently and formerly incarcerated artists to create an artwork that reflects on their relationship to their bed. Within the prison system, a person’s bed is one of the only spaces where they can be alone: for some, the bed is a place of safety and privacy, for others it is a space of isolation and angst.

The exhibition features an array of artworks in diverse media—including murals, paintings, and audio narratives—as well as an immersive installation, which mirrors a prison cell at Central California Women's Facility at Chowchilla (where the curators reside).

YBCA is also part of the Museums for All program, offering free Museum admission to anyone with a Medi-Cal or EBT card.
